The 22nd edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1972 from February 24th to 26th in the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Mike Bongiorno with Sylva Koscina and Paolo Villaggio .

procedure

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

In 1972, the organization of the festival passed to Elio Gigante on behalf of the casino. Before the start of the festival, however, singers and conductors announced a strike because irregularities in the pre-selection of participants were suspected. The protest leader was Claudio Villa , who was not admitted to the competition this time . However, on February 22, two days before the start, a group of singers announced that they would not take part in the strike, including Gianni Morandi , Lucio Dalla and Nada . Villa continued the protest very heatedly until the Rai promised to hold an additional evening for the singers who were not admitted to the competition.

In addition to Morandi, who was participating for the first time, Domenico Modugno (for the tenth time in Sanremo), Milva , Bobby Solo , Gigliola Cinquetti and Pino Donaggio were the big names in this edition . With Nicola Di Bari and Nada the previous year's winners were represented again, Ricchi e Poveri took part for the third time in a row. The Brazilian musician Roberto Carlos returned after four years and, with the Spanish band Aguaviva (second participation in a row), made up the now much smaller international field of participants. Notable newcomers were Marcella Bella , Carla Bissi (later known as Alice known) and the band Delirium of Ivano Fossati .

The biggest rule change was the elimination of the two versions: Since 1957, each song had been performed by two interpreters in different versions, from 1972 only one interpreter per song was provided (which also drastically reduced the number of participants). The 28 songs were only repeated instrumentally by Franck Pourcel . Seven songs were able to qualify for the final in each semi-finals. Nicola Di Bari, Nada and Gianni Morandi reached the final as favorites, Di Bari finally won (his second in a row).
