Paolo Villaggio (2008)

Paolo Villaggio (born December 30, 1932 in Genoa , † July 3, 2017 in Rome ) was an Italian actor , director and writer .

Life

Paolo and his twin brother Piero Villaggio were born in Genoa in 1932 as the sons of an engineer and a German teacher . He worked as an employee and also appeared on small stages in Genoa as an actor. In 1966 Ivo Chiesa engaged him at the Teatro Stabile, where he played in avant-garde productions. Villaggio also worked successfully on television in the late 1960s as a presenter and comedian in the role of an employee who bothered with the whims of his boss.

In 1968 Villaggio made his film debut. He played prominent leading roles in Vittorio Gassman's Senza famiglia nullatenenti cercano affetto (1972) and Nanni Loy's Sistemo l'America e torno (1974). The high point of his film success in Italy was the comedy The Biggest Cattle Far and Wide by Luciano Salce in 1975 , in which Villaggio impersonated his well-known TV character “Fantozzi” for the first time on the screen. In Germany he achieved his title role in Robinson jr. (1976) Notoriety. In the 1970s and 80s he took part in numerous undemanding comedies and repeated his success several times with the "Fantozzi" role. In 1990 he played a leading role in Federico Fellini's last film The Voice of the Moon (La voce della luna) , which marked the beginning of the breakaway from his stereotypical role cliché. He consolidated this new position with his roles in Ermanno Olmi's Il segreto del bosco vecchio (1993) and Mario Monicelli's Cari fottutissimi amici (1994). His work includes around 80 film and television productions.

Villaggio was also the author of numerous short stories about the hapless accountant Fantozzi, as well as other texts and an autobiography.

He was a member of the left parties Partito Comunista Italiano and the Democrazia Proletaria . For the latter, he ran unsuccessfully to the Italian parliamentary election in 1987. In 1994 he ran for the Lista Pannella of the left-liberal politician Marco Pannella . In 2013 he expressed his support for the 5-star movement Beppe Grillos .

Villaggio died in Rome on July 3, 2017 at the age of 84.
