Raffaele Mertes

Raffaele Mertes (born July 8, 1956 in Rome ) is an Italian cameraman , director , screenwriter and producer .

Work

From 1978 to 1983 he worked as a camera assistant in Italian and international productions, and since 1982 he has worked as a cameraman in numerous films. In 1998 he made his directorial debut with Amo Costanza ma senza speranza .

Raffaele Mertes became known as a cameraman and director for his numerous works on biblical subjects .

His best-known directing project is a four-part series of indirect Jesus films made between 1999 and 2001, in which the person of Jesus is successively illuminated from the perspective of four biblical persons: Joseph von Nazareth (1999), Maria Magdalena (2000), Judas (2001) and Thomas (2001). The series was marketed in the Italian original under the overall title Gli amici di Gesù (“The Friends of Jesus”) and shown on Austrian television under the title Jesus Legenden . In the US the DVD series was titled Close to Jesus and in Germany the DVD edition was titled The Bible. New Testament. People who met Jesus.
