Maria Magdalena from 2001 is a film adaptation of the Bible that tells the life of Jesus' most famous disciple .

action

The young Maria is rejected by her husband Amos because she is sterile. Disappointed and driven from the village of Magdala, she joins the Roman Silvanus, with whom she falls in love. Silvanus received the order from Herod Antipas to shadow John the Baptist . To prove her loyalty to Silvanus, Maria takes on the assignment - with terrible consequences .

A little later Johannes is arrested and thrown into prison. Maria feels guilty and follows the group. At the court of Herod she meets another Roman, Vitellius, who confronts Maria with the sad truth that Silvanus only used her and that he is now being celebrated as the hero of the hour. Maria is now beginning to do everything possible to free Johannes. She begins an affair with Vitellius full of passion.

background

The drama , which was staged in the desert of Morocco , is the most fictional Bible film in a long time. Only in the last quarter of an hour does the viewer see Jesus, and the important events in which Mary Magdalene is involved are only mentioned in passing.

Critics also criticize the length of the film and the fact that it hardly contains any spirituality . Maria Grazia Cucinotta seems quite stiff in the lead role, and the rest of the cast can hardly convince in their roles.

Only the equipment by Paolo Biagetti and the costume design by Simonetta Leoncini and Giovanni Viti can definitely compete with other films.
