Gustav Luebcke

Gustav Lübcke (born October 24, 1868 in Hamm ; † August 29, 1925 there ) was a businessman, art collector and museum director.

Life

Gustav Lübcke attended Hammonense grammar school in Hamm, but left it before graduating from high school to do a bookbinding apprenticeship. On February 11, 1896, Gustav Lübcke married the antique dealer Therese Nüsser. With the management, Gustav Lübcke was given the opportunity to systematically expand his own collection of arts and crafts , which he had already created in connection with his friend, art collector Laurenz Heinrich Hetjens . As a result he was u. a. Art expert for the district court of Düsseldorf.

In 1913 he made an initial donation to the municipal museum in Hamm and finally offered his entire collection on loan in 1916. Negotiations about the loans led to a contract with the city of Hamm in which he transferred his entire collection to the city in return for an annuity for himself and his wife. Until his death in 1925, Gustav Lübcke worked as a museum director in his hometown. After his death the museum got his name and has since been called the Städtisches Gustav-Lübcke-Museum .

Lübcke was a member of the Hammer Freemason Lodge at the bright light.
