nLite , vLite and NTLite are Dino Nuhagic developed computer programs that allow customized installation media of on Windows NT -based operating systems can be created. The aim is to reduce the installation effort and to obtain an installation medium that is better geared towards your own needs. For example, components that are not required are removed, updates ( service packs and patches ) are integrated directly and system settings are saved on the installation data medium.

Supported Operating Systems

From Windows Vista onwards, 32 and 64-bit x86 versions were standard, so that vLite and NTLite also support them. But nLite already supported Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and the 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003.

Functions

The most important function of both programs is the removal of programs such as Outlook Express , MSN or old drivers and languages so that they are not installed in the first place. This saves space on the CD and the installation is also faster. In order to prevent important system components from being accidentally removed, a dialog can be used to mark which functions are absolutely necessary. Critical components are colored red.

Other important features are the many preset Registry - Tweaks (. Eg that no balloon tips will disappear).

Finally, a bootable ISO file can be created or an installation CD / DVD can be burned directly.

Special features of nLite

nLite also masters the integration of Windows XP service packs and hotfixes using the slipstreaming method. If you remove all components that can currently be removed, the minimum image size of a Windows XP installation CD (including SP2 and all hotfixes) is about 100 MB. A good standard value for the size of the CD is around 200 to 250 MB; this can be achieved without integrating additional programs and drivers. A CD of this size, freshly installed without swap files, results in an operating system size of around 500 to 700 MB on the hard disk. Components that have been removed can no longer be subsequently installed from the CD created in this way.

In addition to removing Windows components and drivers, nLite also offers the option of integrating certain drivers. This is useful, for example, with drivers for SATA or RAID controllers, as it saves you having to create an otherwise necessary driver disk. This means that Windows XP can also be installed without a floppy disk drive, especially on notebooks that have a SATA controller. Drivers that have to be installed under Windows can optionally be copied to the CD and installed after the Windows setup is complete.

Special features of vLite

From version 1.16, vLite can also integrate Service Pack 1 into a Vista DVD, even if Microsoft does not recommend this method prior to Service Pack 2. However, there are still some limitations: The integration will fail if components have been removed. However, components can be removed when using a DVD with SP1 already integrated.

NTLite

The successor to nLite and vLite is the NTLite , which was also developed by Dino Nuhagic, but is now commercial software. After an alpha version from September 18, 2014, the stable version 1.0 for Windows 7 was finally released on November 6, 2015. NTLite uses the WIM file on the installation medium and lets the user decide which drivers and applications to install. The WIM file can also be adapted to e.g. B. applications, drivers, language packs, individual updates and service packs can be integrated directly.

NTLite is available in a free, but limited, free version for private users; the commercial and paid versions are available as Home , Professional and Business editions . The current version supports Windows 7, 8 / 8.1 and 10.

Alternatives

The xp-Iso-Builder program offers functions similar to nLite, but cannot remove any components.

Another alternative is the paid XPlite. However, this is designed to subsequently remove individual components from an already installed system , the installation of which you normally cannot influence. No installation CD is created. The advantage of this program lies in the simple reinstallation of the removed components with the installation CD.

In principle, all these adjustments, whether they are made before or after the installation, can also be carried out without these tools. See the web links as an example.

For Windows 7 there is a program called RT Seven Lite that offers functions similar to nLite or vLite. The last edition (English version ) of RT Seven Lite (edition 2.6.0) was released on March 21, 2012 and supports 32- and 64-bit editions including Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 .

Another alternative for Windows 7 is the Win Toolkit .
