Roberto Carlos (musician)
Roberto Carlos Braga (born April 19, 1941 in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim , Espírito Santo ) is a Brazilian singer and has been active as such for over 50 years.
Life
At the beginning of his career he was a big fan of Elvis Presley and therefore also made rock music. In the 60s he took part in three films that were heavily based on the Beatles films . At the time he was a youth idol in Brazil.
Since the 1970s, Roberto Carlos has mainly sung soulful love songs. With romantic, sensitive lyrics and melodies, he has gained a very large following in all of Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Many songs were translated from Portuguese into Spanish and sung by Carlos, because they sold better in the Spanish-speaking world.
So far, he has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. This makes him the most successful Brazilian musician in history.
He is a regular guest on Brazilian television. At times he gave concerts in front of invited guests on the cruise ship Costa Fortuna .
His most famous pieces include Amigo, Detalhes , Café da Manhã, Cama e Mesa, Jesus Cristo, Palavras and Emoções.
In 1989 he received a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance . In 2007 an asteroid was named after him: (19517) Robertocarlos . In 2011 Roberto Carlos received the Papal Order of Merit, the Jerusalem Pilgrim Cross, from the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Fouad Twal .
