The twelfth edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1962 from February 8 to 10 and on February 18 in the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Renato Tagliani together with Laura Efrikian and Vicky Ludovisi .
procedure
Although the 1962 edition with 32 contributions and 45 participants overshadowed all previous ones , Sergio Pugliese , Director General of the RAI , decided not to broadcast the four evenings of the festival in full, but only one hour of the finals on Saturday and a short summary of the award ceremony . The organization passed from Ezio Radaelli to Gianni Ravera , who had already participated as a singer at the festival three times. The popular show master Renato Tagliani took over the moderation, accompanied by the two young actresses Laura Efrikian and Vicky Ludovisi. The orchestras were directed by Cinico Angelini and Gianni Ferrio .
The field of participants showed no more innovative tendencies, the selection criteria also preferred contributions by songwriters who were already successful in the festival. The only representative of the Cantautori was Tony Renis , who participated for the second time in a row. Adriano Celentano was not among the participants, but gave concerts in the vicinity of Sanremo at the same time as the festival. With Myriam Del Mare, Lucia Altieri, Corrado Lojacono, Torrebruno, Edda Montanari, Mario D'Alba, Rossana, Gesy Sebena, Gian Costello, Ernesto Bonino and Rocco Montana, a number of singers made their debut, none of which could leave a lasting impression afterwards. Actor Gino Bramieri , who had previously acted primarily as an impersonator of singers on television, caught the eye .
From the beginning, special attention was paid to the collaboration between Claudio Villa and Domenico Modugno , respectively the figureheads of tradition and renewal and thus extremely contradicting: their song Addio… addio… was a favorite. The Tango Italiano in the interpretations of Milva and Sergio Bruni was also given good chances. As in the previous year, the vote took place after the final evening, for which the juries had approved twelve entries, via the VotoFestival : In the following week, everyone could cast their votes for the finalists of the festival using the Enalotto coupons. Without any major surprises, Addio… addio… emerged victorious from the vote with 34.8%, followed by Tango Italiano (29.2%) and Gondolì gondolà by Sergio Bruni and Ernesto Bonino .

successes
Only the top five of the competition entries could reach the top 15 of the charts, three of which alternated at the top. Quando quando quando by Tony Renis , which had only achieved fourth place in the competition, proved to be particularly successful ; in the English version by Pat Boone it was also a success in the USA. Addio… addio… was not a lasting success, even in the Eurovision Song Contest 1962 Villa only achieved ninth place out of 15.
