Betty Curtis
Betty Curtis (born March 21, 1936 in Milan as Roberta Corti , † June 15, 2006 in Lecco ) was an Italian singer who was particularly successful in the 1960s. She took part in the Sanremo Festival six times and represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 .
Career
Curtis was discovered by Teddy Reno , who also gave her the Americanizing stage name. She began her career as a singer in 1955 with minor appearances in Lombardy until they became aware of her and she was given the opportunity to appear on the radio and (later) on television. As a "melodic screamer " (urlatrice melodica) her first singles were cover versions of American or French ( Gilbert Bécaud ) successes. Curtis took part in the 1959 Sanremo Festival in three different compilations (with Wilma De Angelis , Claudio Villa and Johnny Dorelli ) . The song Nessuno presented with De Angelis was later made famous by Mina .
In 1960 the singer returned to Sanremo with Amore senza sole (again with Dorelli) and in 1961 she won with Luciano Tajoli and the song Al di là, written by Mogol and Carlo Donida . She was able to sing this at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 and landed there in fifth place. With the song Tu si '' a malincunia she also won the Festival di Napoli in 1961 . After another Sanremo participation in 1962 Curtis achieved a number one hit in 1963 with a cover of Petula Clark's Chariot . Together with the British singer, she later competed at the Sanremo Festival in 1965 . After the last festival participation in 1967 , things got quieter for the singer.
Between 1962 and 1965 Curtis' recordings appeared in Germany on the Italia label . She also went on some international tours. Between 1959 and 1966 she also starred in four music films . In 2006 the singer died after a long illness at the age of 70.
