biography

The beginnings

Gianni Morandi was born on December 11, 1944 in Monghidoro ( Emilia-Romagna ). He first appeared in public on New Years 1956 when he was twelve . After studying singing in Bologna and appearing again in public since 1958, he won the Bellaria Music Festival on April 15, 1962 . There he was discovered by Franco Migliacci , his future producer, and got a record deal with RCA Italiana . In 1962 he brought out the first singles Andavo a 100 all'ora , Go-Kart Twist and Donna da morire at RCA .

The breakthrough

Gianni Morandi at the Eurovision Song Contest 1970

Morandi's breakthrough came in 1963 with the song Fatti mandare dalla mamma a prendere il latte , which was quickly followed by the hits In ginocchio da te , Non son degno di te and Se non avessi più te , with music films of the same name in which the singer appeared Played the main role. He also won the Cantagiro and Canzonissima competitions as well as the Festival delle rose organized by RCA . In 1966 he married Laura Efrikian , with whom he subsequently had two children, Marianna and Marco.

By the end of the 1960s, Morandi had 13 number one hits, he also starred in a dozen movies and appeared frequently on television shows. In 1967 he had to do his military service, which meant an interruption of his activities for over a year. At the end of the year he received the seventh gold record for more than seven million records sold.

In 1970 Gianni Morandi finally entered the Eurovision Song Contest in Amsterdam with the song Occhi di ragazza for Italy and took eighth place.

Times of crisis

In the 1970s, Morandi's popularity declined significantly, also because 33 "albums were now established, while he was mainly successful with singles. After several commercial failures, he turned to the theater. He was also increasingly active in cinema and television. His participation in the Sanremo Festival in 1972 did not bring the hoped-for success; only with the children's song Sei forte papà , which he described as theme song had taken a moderated from him telecast, managed Morandi 1975 still a number-one hit. Morandi's marriage to Laura also fell apart.

The return

In the 80s, Morandi managed to return to success with songs such as Mariù (contribution to the Sanremo Festival 1980 ), La mia nemica amatissima ( Sanremo 1983 ) or Grazie perché (in a duet with Amii Stewart ). He continued to be present as an actor, for example in the television series Wie im Flug (1984). Morandi plays the pilot Davide, who is separated from his wife Barbara ( Claude Jade ). Their daughter brings the two back together. In 1981 he was also one of the co-founders of the initiative Nazionale italiana cantanti , initiated by the songwriter Mogol , a football team that consists exclusively of well-known Italian singers and plays for charitable purposes.

Morandi's next number one hit came in 1987 when he won the Sanremo Festival with Enrico Ruggeri and Umberto Tozzi with the song Si può dare di più . This song then became the official anthem of the Nazionale cantanti . He then started the Dalla / Morandi project with Lucio Dalla , from which a successful album and a joint tour (followed by a live album ) emerged in 1988 . After further musical successes, concerts and appearances in film and television, Morandi took part in the Sanremo Festival for the fifth time in 1995 , this time in a duet with Barbara Cola . You took second place with In amore . Cola was produced by Morandi himself, who in the meantime had co-founded the label Penguin (later renamed Mormora Music ).

In 1997 Gianni Morandi's second son Pietro was born; the mother was Anna Dan. After the very successful tour in 1996, Morandi continued to release albums in the following years, including several compilations. The television audience saw him in 1999 as the protagonist of the television show C'era un ragazzo . The following year he took part for the sixth and so far last time at the Sanremo Festival and achieved third place. After switching to the Epic label ( Sony Music ), the next album L'amore ci cambia la vita was released in 2002 . Also this year, Morandi presented the show Uno di noi together with Lorella Cuccarini . In 2004 he married his partner Anna Dan. Two years later the singer published his autobiography Diario di un ragazzo italiano .

At the Sanremo Festival 2008 Morandi appeared out of competition with Nel blu dipinto di blu , but in 2011 he took over the moderation of the festival himself, alongside Belen Rodriguez and Elisabetta Canalis . Together with Rocco Papaleo and Ivana Mrázová , he also took over this position in 2012 . The following year he released his next studio album Bisogna vivere , which was preceded by the single Solo insieme saremo felici .

In addition to further concerts and television appearances and the publication of the compilation Autoscatto 7.0 on the occasion of his 70th birthday, Morandi began a collaboration with Claudio Baglioni , which led to the Capitani coraggiosi project and a joint tour in 2015 . In 2017 Morandi took part in Fabio Rovazzi's third single , Volare , which reached number two in the charts.
