The 30th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1980 from February 7th to 9th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Claudio Cecchetto with Roberto Benigni and Olimpia Carlisi .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

After the mixed experiences of the past decade, organizer Gianni Ravera introduced a number of innovations for the 30th edition of the festival. The moderation post went to Claudio Cecchetto , who was known as the presenter of the Disco ring program on Radio 105 ; the actress were asked at his side Olimpia Carlisi and Roberto Benigni , known from the TV show L'altra domenica by Renzo Arbore . Gianfranco Ramacci , who designed the stage based on the model of a disco, was hired for the set . A big change compared to previous years was the complete elimination of the orchestra, which means that the candidates' appearances mainly took place in half playback . The Rai only broadcast the full-length finale, while the first two evenings were shown together in the late-night program.

The number of participants was increased again to 30; 20 of these reached the final on the third evening. In addition to some big names such as Gianni Morandi , Bobby Solo and Peppino di Capri and two singers who have already been successful in the charts and as songwriters ( Toto Cutugno and Pupo ), the proportion of debutants was again very high this year. Among them were several international participants: Leroy Gomez , Orlando Johnson (brother of Wess ), the brief crocus singer Henry Freis and Sally Oldfield , who sang her song in English. Of the other debutants, the young punk band Decibel received a lot of attention.

In the finals, Cutugno prevailed ahead of Enzo Malepasso and Pupo, a success that was also reflected in the charts and ensured the festival got off to a good start in the new decade. Several provocative remarks and appearances by comoderator Benigni were also very effective in the media.
