Decibel is an Italian rock band formed in Milan in 1977.

Band history

The band's history began in 1972 when Enrico Ruggeri and Fulvio Muzio met at school. Both played in their own band, Josafat and Tip Gods . When Ruggeri met Silvio Capeccia, he founded the successor band Champagne Molotov with him in 1974 , which merged with Trifoglio (consisting of Pino Mancini, Roberto Turati and Enrico Longhin) to form the new band Decibel in 1977 . Capeccia withdrew immediately, however, as he could identify only little with the strong tendency to punk . The band got a recording deal with Spaghetti Records and released their debut album Punk in 1977 , which, however, was a failure. Then Mancini, Turati and Longhin (ex-Trifoglio) left the band and Ruggeri turned back to Capeccia.

The two musicians contacted Fulvio Muzio in 1979, who was playing in the band Il Vortice at the time , and put together a new lineup: in addition to Muzio, 15-year-old Tommy Mianazzi on drums and Mino Riboni on bass joined them. Despite their bad reputation as punks, the musicians turned towards the New Wave musically . At the Sanremo Festival in 1980 Decibel presented the song Contessa and was able to reach the final. The group thus reached a wide audience and took part in numerous radio and television events. Under the production of Shel Shapiro , she released the second album Vivo da re . After tensions between the musicians and internal changes at Spaghetti Records , however, Ruggeri left the record company and with it the band.

After lengthy legal difficulties, Decibel (without Ruggeri) released the album Novecento in 1982 ; the new drummer was Ellade Bandini, the vocals were now taken over by Capeccia. While Ruggeri had a successful solo career, the band experimented more with electronic sounds and developed in the direction of ambient . After a long period without publications (Muzio and Capeccia meanwhile wrote film music for soundtracks of documentary films) the fourth album Desaparecida was released in 1998 , which only contained instrumental tracks.

When Enrico Ruggeri took part in Sanremo in 2010, he was also accompanied by Fulvio Muzio and Silvio Capeccia in one evening. The official reunion was finally announced in 2016, and the new album Noblesse Oblige was released in 2017 . The band also performed at the Sanremo Festival 2018 with the song Lettera dal Duca , dedicated to David Bowie , on the fourth evening of the festival together with Midge Ure .
