The stage of the Ariston Theater during the 2012 festival

The 62nd edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 2012 from February 14th to 18th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Gianni Morandi together with Rocco Papaleo and Ivana Mrázová .

The winner of the competition was Emma Marrone with Non è l'inferno .

For the second time in a row, singer Gianni Morandi was the moderator . He was supported for the first time by the actor Rocco Papaleo and the model Ivana Mrázová . In addition, Tamara Ecclestone was initially planned as a co-host. Mrázová was absent on the first evening due to illness, which is why she was temporarily represented by the two co-presenters of the previous edition, Belén Rodríguez and Elisabetta Canalis .

As in the previous year, the artistic director was Gianmarco Mazzi . Directed by Stefano Vicario , the set was by Gaetano Castelli , the choreographies by Daniel Ezralow and Franco Miseria . Marco Sabiu took over the musical direction .

The newcomer category was named Sanremosocial this year , as social media played a major role in the preselection. Two participants (Iohosemprevoglia and Bidiel) qualified through the Area Sanremo competition , the remaining six through the online competition Sanremosocial Day - La sfida .

First evening

On the first evening, all 14 participants in the main category performed their song. The opinion polling jury was entitled to vote, on the basis of which two entries were to be excluded. However, due to a technical defect, there were no eliminations in the end and all 14 entries progressed one round.

In addition, the eight participants in the newcomer category were introduced.

Second evening

On the second evening all 14 participants appeared again with their competition entries, this time (according to the vote of the demoscopic jury) four entries were eliminated.

The eight newcomers competed against each other in pairs. Here, the voting consisted of 50% televoting and 50% of the evaluation of a jury of orchestral musicians. Four of the participants made it to the final.

Third evening

The third evening was as Viva l'Italia! titled and dedicated to the history of Italian music and its international reception. The 14 participants all presented a well-known Italian song, accompanied by an international star.

In addition, the four eliminated participants could appear again with their competition entries (Marlene Kuntz performed together with Samuel ), whereby two were brought back into the race through the televoting.

Fourth evening

On the fourth evening, the twelve remaining candidates in the main category performed a new version of their festival contribution in a duet with a guest. Two of the entries were definitely ruled out after a vote that consisted of 50% televoting and 50% points from the orchestra.

In addition, the four finalists in the newcomer category appeared again. After a final voting round, again on the basis of televoting and orchestra as well as a radio jury and a Facebook vote, the winner of the category was announced.

During the evening it was noticed that Loredana Bertè apparently appeared in quasi-playback, which ran the risk of being disqualified; However, the festival management issued a warning.

Fifth evening

On the last evening, the ten finalists in the main category appeared again with their contributions. After a first round of voting, the press room was given the opportunity to move a candidate up three positions in the ranking, which meant that Noemi (alongside Emma and Arisa) made it to the final round, while Gigi D'alessio and Loredana Bertè fell back to fourth. In the final round, pure televoting was used for the last time.

Selection for the Eurovision Song Contest

In 2011, Italy successfully returned to the Eurovision Song Contest after a long absence . As in the previous year, the Italian candidate for the European competition was selected from the field of participants of the Sanremo Festival by a separate commission of the Rai. The choice fell on Nina Zilli . However, she did not present her Sanremo contribution Per semper , but the song L'amore è femmina (Out of Love) .
