Torna a Surriento
Torna a Surriento ('Come back to Sorrento') is a popular Neapolitan song (Canzone napoletana). It was created in collaboration between the composer Ernesto De Curtis (1875–1937) and the lyricist Giambattista De Curtis (1860–1926). Although written as early as 1894, the song only became known from 1905 through the Piedigrotta Festival .
It had previously been heard in 1902 on the occasion of a brief visit by the incumbent Prime Minister Giuseppe Zanardelli to the Hotel Imperial Tramontano in Sorrento . It was intended to make the distinguished guest return to Sorrento and support the city.
The song has been interpreted by many well-known singers, including a. by Beniamino Gigli , José Carreras , Plácido Domingo , Luciano Pavarotti , Mario Lanza , Franco Corelli , Giuseppe Di Stefano , Dean Martin and Andrea Bocelli . The popular melody was used around 60 years later by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman for Elvis Presley in the song Surrender .
