The 39th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1989 from February 21st to 25th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Danny Quinn , Paola Dominguín , Gianmarco Tognazzi and Rosita Celentano together with Kay Sandvik and Ann Clare Matz .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

In 1989 Adriano Aragozzini took over the organization of the festival for the first time . In his first year he set some new records: There were 48 contributions in three categories on five evenings, plus four main moderators. Four figli d'arte , children of well-known artist parents , were selected as moderators : Rosita Celentano (daughter of Adriano Celentano and Claudia Mori ), Gianmarco Tognazzi (son of Ugo Tognazzi and Franca Bettoja ), Paola Dominguín (daughter of Luis Miguel Dominguín and Lucia Bosè ) and Danny Quinn (son of Anthony Quinn ). The two American presenters Kay Sandvik and Clare Ann Matz , on the other hand, were responsible for the outdoor stage with the international guests.

In the main category 24 well-known artists entered the race, in the newcomer category 16 new talents. The third category, called Emergenti , was intended for eight young, aspiring musicians who had already released at least one album. The voting system remained unchanged: in the main category, the audience determined the result using totip betting slips, in the other two categories the polling jury. As in previous years, the performers appeared in half playback , only Gino Paoli brought his own band onto the stage in the finale.

Big names in the Italian music scene returned to the festival after many years: besides Gino Paoli, these were above all Ornella Vanoni and Mia Martini . The best-known newcomers, on the other hand, were old stars Renato Carosone and Enzo Jannacci on the one hand, and the teenage idol Jovanotti on the other . Francesco Salvi , Gigi Sabani and Marisa Laurito came straight from TV . There was also no lack of the usual participants of that time, such as Toto Cutugno , Al Bano & Romina Power , Riccardo Fogli , Fiordaliso or the favored Anna Oxa and Fausto Leali . The international guests included Ray Charles , Elton John and Depeche Mode .

Mia Martini made a special impression during the festival with the song Almeno tu nell'universo , which earned her the critic's award. Among the young participants, the group Ladri di Biciclette and Jovanotti were particularly popular . In the final, the favorites Anna Oxa and Fausto Leali with Ti lascerò were able to prevail without difficulty, ahead of Toto Cutugno, who came second for the fourth time, and Al Bano & Romina Power. Mietta and Paola Turci won the newcomer categories .

successes

This year 13 festival entries reached the top 25 of the Italian single charts, including three from the newcomer categories. The hit parade successes reflected the success in the competition only to a limited extent, with Francesco Salvi and Jovanotti being particularly successful (7th and 5th place in the competition); the Ladri di Biciclette made it into the charts, although they were eliminated in the newcomer category in the preliminary round.

The winning duo of Anna Oxa and Fausto Leali also represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1989 with the song Avrei voluto ; there the two reached ninth place.
