The Surfs were a Malagasy pop group of the French-language Yéyé music , which officially existed from 1963 to 1971 .

The six members of the Surfs were four brothers and two sisters, the eldest of twelve children of the Rabaraona family. In 1958 they formed a group called Les Béryls , whose main influence was the Platters . They successfully took part in a competition in Tananarive and won a plane ticket to Paris , where they presented their home Madagascar when the second television station of the Télévision Française began broadcasting on September 8, 1963 at the Porte de Versailles . Roger Marouani later signed her to the Disques Festival record label. He renamed the group Les Surfs in order to benefit from the current popularity of the music of the same name.

In 1963 they recorded Reviens vite et oublie , a cover version of Be My Baby by the Ronettes , and thanks to this title they achieved their first notable success before they (like Frank Alamo ) took part in Sheila's tour. Her small height (1.48 m on average) is one of the elements that make her charm. They recorded several commercial successes, to the sounds of Yéyé , the great majority of which were adaptations of Anglo-Saxon hits such as Si j'avais un marteau , T'en va pas comme ça , Shoop shoop ... va l'embrasser , Adieu chagrin (Revival of a Beatles song ), Scandale dans la famille or À présent tu peux t'en aller . The group's repertoire remained poor in original titles, but this did not bother the audience. In 1966, surfing was one of the stars of the moment, depicted in the mythical photo of Salut les copains immortalized by Jean-Marie Périer . Nevertheless, the success waned very quickly and they stopped making more recordings the following year. After touring Québec , they decided to split up in 1971 and settled in Montréal . The unexpected changes in musical fashion and also in the family life of the members - Monique and Nicole are both mothers of three - are one of the reasons that urged them to quit. In their playing days, the group sold around four million records.

In Québec, Monique and her brother Rocky each pursued solo careers. They found each other again in 1979 to form a duo called Rocky et Monique for two years . The duo split in 1981 when Monique decided to return to France. While on tour in Madagascar in 1989, she founded the group Les Surfs-Feedback with four other brothers (Roland, Rémy, Luc and Dominique) and tried her hand at producing and presenting television programs. She died in Paris on November 15, 1993 . Nicole died on May 5, 2000 in San Diego , California . Both rest in the family grave in their old village of Fiakarana (Madagascar).

Then Rocky went on solo, now under the name Rocky des Surfs (Rocky von den Surfs), with the presentation of a show entitled: Il était une fois ... Les Surfs (Once upon a time ... The Surfs), in who he tells anecdotes about this extraordinary group, interrupted by their great musical successes. He made several tours in Madagascar, accompanied by the "Surfs Feedback". Every now and then he goes on a concert tour through France to show his show on several evenings.
