Equipe 84 was an Italian beat band that was active between 1962 and 1979 and again from 1984 to 2012. She is considered "the most popular representative of the beat scene in Italy".

Band history

The band emerged from the merger of two music groups from Modena , Giovani Leoni (previously Le Tigri ) and Paolo & i Gatti ( Francesco Guccini had also played with the latter for a while). The founding formation of the new group Equipe 84 consisted of Victor Sogliani, Maurizio Vandelli, Franco Ceccarelli and Alfio Cantarella. The number 84 was derived from the total age of the band members and at the same time referred to the Italian brandy stick 84 . Her first single was Canarino va , the anthem of a football club from Modena. She got her first record deal with the Vedette label and made her official debut there with the singles Papà e mammà and Ora puoi tornare . As early as 1965, after further singles, the band's self-titled debut album followed.

With Un giorno tu mi cercherai , Equipe 84 entered the Sanremo Festival in 1966 , but did not make it to the final. The single release contained the song L'antisociale written by Guccini as B-side . After switching to the record label Dischi Ricordi, the band achieved a number of successes: With Io ho in mente te (Italian version of You were on my mind ) they won the Cantagiro competition in 1966, the B-side Resta (a cover of the song Stay ( Just a Little Bit Longer) ) was also very successful. In Germany, both cover versions were released by the Italia label. The Sonny Bono cover Bang Bang was able to build on this, whose B-side Auschwitz came again from the pen of Guccini. The first Ricordi album was Io ho in mente te .

The song written by Lucio Battisti and Mogol on September 29th brought the band their first number one hit in 1967; the B-side È dall'amore che nasce l'uomo was again from Guccini. The next single Nel cuore, nell'anima was similarly successful . In 1968 the singles Un anno and Un angelo blu (cover versions of Traffic and Honeybus ) and the next album Stereoequipe , the first Italian music album to be released exclusively in stereo format, were released. Equipe 84 achieved a second number one hit in 1969 with Tutta mia la città , cover of a song by The Move , followed by the single Pomeriggio ore sei .

In 1970, drummer Alfio Cantarella was caught in possession of hashish and arrested. This event marked a turning point in the band's career. After the release of the song Il sapone, la pistola, la chitarra e altre meraviglie written by Paolo Conte , Franco Ceccarelli left the band. The remaining members Vandelli and Sogliani recorded the album ID with additional musicians and then renamed themselves Nuova Equipe 84 on the initiative of Vandelli (the line-up also included the later PFM front man Franz Di Cioccio and Dario Baldan Bembo ). With the song 4 marzo 1943 this formation took part together with Lucio Dalla at the Sanremo Festival in 1971 and reached third place.

After the single Casa mia and the album of the same name, Di Cioccio got out again; it was followed by the singles Una giornata al mare (again from Conte) and Pullman . With the return of drummer Cantarella in 1973 and the change to the Ariston Records label , the old name was adopted again and two singles were released (including Diario ) and the album Dr. Jekyll e Mr. Hyde . The following year, the album Sacrificio followed after further singles . After that, the band's activities declined until front man Vandelli, who had already started solo projects, announced the breakup of the band in the early 80s.

Just a few years later, Sogliani and Ceccarelli reunited and revitalized Equipe 84. The group performed with changing line-ups and in 1989 released another album, Un amore vale l'altro . Sogliani also founded the split-off Equipe Extra in 1995 , but died in the same year of an aneurysm , whereupon Ceccarelli continued the band alone. Maurizio Vandelli also remained musically active, but never returned to the band. With the death of Ceccarelli in 2012, Equipe 84 came to an end.
