The Black Eyed Peas [ ˌblæk.aɪd.ˈpiːz ] (German: Die Schwarzaugenbohnen ) is an American hip-hop group from Los Angeles .

After the entry of Stacy Ferguson in 2003, the music group achieved a breakthrough with the mass audience with their third album Elephunk and they also celebrated success with the 2005 album Monkey Business . Both albums received gold awards due to their sales figures .

Musical career

Beginnings

Black Eyed Peas in Hamburg (2000)

After their first joint appearances around Los Angeles, the founding members apl.de.ap , will.i.am and Dante Santiago signed their first record deal with Ruthless Records , the record label of the former rapper, in 1989 under the name Atban Klann (A Tribe Beyond A Nation) Eazy-E . The studio album, developed together over several years, should never find its way into the record stores; the generally positive lyrics of the trio did not fit the image of Ruthless Records in the opinion of the chairmen.

With the AIDS death of Eazy-E in the summer of 1995, the cast of Atban Klann also experienced a change for the first time. Santiago left the band and was replaced by the Mexican Jaime Gomez (later Taboo ); With the background singer Kim Hill , the first female interpreter joined the band, which from now on called itself The Black Eyed Peas . In contrast to the extremely popular gangsta rap at the time, the band made a name for themselves in the mid-1990s, alongside Ozomatli and Jurassic 5 , primarily as a pure live act on a local level.

Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap and Taboo live in 2001

In 1997 the band finally managed to sign a second recording deal with Interscope Records . Just a year later, the band's debut album, Behind The Front, was released. The record became a modest success, but it also earned the group praise for its alternative take on hip-hop, which included the singles Joints & Jam and Fallin 'Up . In 2000 Interscope finally published the similarly successful follow-up work Bridging The Gap , which also produced its first commercial successes with the Macy-Gray collaboration Request + Line .

Elephunk

In 2003, after Kim Hill left, singer Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson joined The Black Eyed Peas. Although Ferguson was initially only planned as a guest artist, will.i.am, apl.de.ap and Taboo later persuaded her to join the band as a full member. At the same time, the band released Elephunk, not only their third, but also their most successful album to date. The record sold more than 7 million copies worldwide and made the quartet one of the most famous and successful acts of the year within a few months.

With the decoupled singles Shut Up , Hey Mama and Let's Get It Started , they regularly stayed in the top chart ranks until the end of 2004. But especially the first single Where Is the Love? , a collaboration with Justin Timberlake , contributed significantly to the success of the album, as the anti-war song went straight to a global hit, which was in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and a number other nations immediately reached number 1 in the single charts. In the end, the song even received two Grammy nominations, including in the Record of the Year category .

Monkey business

Remembering the stay of the Black Eyed Peas at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 2007.

In 2005 the band released their fourth album Monkey Business . The record surpassed the success of its predecessors with 10 million units sold again and gave The Black Eyed Peas the long-awaited breakthrough in the USA. With Don't Phunk With My Heart , Don't Lie , My Humps and Pump It , the group posted four more top 10 hits and regional number 1 hits. For Don't Phunk With My Heart , Don't Lie , My Humps and Gone Going , they were nominated for a total of five Grammys, of which they won two. In 2005 the Monkey Business Tour started, during which the band played in sold-out venues all over the world.

In June 2006 The Black Eyed Peas released a new interpretation of the classic Mas que nada together with their label colleague Sérgio Mendes . The new edition produced by will.i.am developed in the course of the summer, especially in Europe, into a further success for the band, whose members concentrated primarily on solo projects in the time after.

The end

The fifth studio album by Black Eyed Peas The END (abbreviation for The Energy Never Dies ) was released on June 4, 2009. Boom Boom Pow was released as the first single , which again became an international hit.

Music critics see the continued evolution of the band from a "once interesting Crew" to a "radio-friendly" Mainstream - Pop group rather negative. The album, which is suitable for parties, will certainly be commercially successful, but the lyrics are “ devoid of meaning” and the auto-tune chants have long been “overused”.

The second release from the album, I Gotta Feeling , was able to follow on from the success of the previous single and managed to place itself at the top of the charts in the United States and Great Britain. In the US, the second single pushed the predecessor Boom Boom Pow from the top of the charts. Later they set a new record with it, being the first interpreter to stay in first place for 26 weeks. The song also became a number one hit in Austria and later in Switzerland.

Meet Me Halfway was the third single from The END. It was released on June 2, 2009 as part of “Countdown to The END” as the third and final promotional single for The END and reached number 1 in Germany and Great Britain and in the United States but only 7th place.

Just like “Meet Me Halfway”, “Imma Be” was released as a promotional single during the “Countdown to The END” on May 19, 2009. Due to heavy downloads, the single was able to climb to number 50 on the Billboard charts after its promotion. "Imma Be" was broadcast on December 15, 2009 on US radio stations. The song became Black Eyed Pea's third number one hit in the US from that album.

The beginning

The 6th studio album The Beginning was released on November 26, 2010. The first single " The Time (Dirty Bit) " was first announced on October 21, 2010 by will.i.am on the Internet. It was released as a download on November 5, 2010. The song is a remake of " (I've Had) The Time of My Life " from the movie Dirty Dancing . According to The Big Issue, the Peas are planning a 3D film project with director James Cameron . They also announced they would perform at the Super Bowl XLV in February 2011 . On February 18, 2011, the second single, Just Can't Get Enough , was released. The accompanying music video was filmed in Tokyo just a week before the Tōhoku earthquake and is dedicated to all people in Japan. It was released on March 16, 2011. The third single was Don't Stop the Party , which, however, could not build on the success of its predecessor.

From November 2011 to January 2013 the band was on a break in which the members wanted to pursue their own projects.

At the end of January 2013, will.i.am announced that the “creative” break was over and that they would now like to work together on new projects.

On June 3, 2017, The Black Eyed Peas performed at the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final in Cardiff, and one day later at the One Love Manchester benefit concert .

In August 2017, Fergie confirmed that she had left the band and wanted to focus on her solo career.

Masters of the Sun

Black Eyed Peas plus Jessica Reynoso on stage in Manchester in November 2018.

The seventh studio album "Masters of the Sun Vol. 1" was released digitally on October 26, 2018 and subsequently on CD on November 9, 2018. The name of the project is based on the comic "Black Eyed Peas Present: Masters of the Sun: The Zombie Chronicles", which was published on August 8, 2017. As the digitally released tracks "Street Livin", "Ring the Alarm Pt. 1, 2 & 3", "Constant Pt. 1 & 2" and "Get It" already indicated, the band is returning with this project their roots as a trio with their alternative interpretation of hip-hop as well as with a background singer. Shortly after the album was announced, the first official single "Big Love" followed, but it was only released digitally. On "Masters of the Sun Vol. 1" the Filipino singer Jessica Reynoso, who was discovered by apl.de.ap on "The Voice Philippines" and later introduced to will.i.am & Taboo, is on most of the tracks Listen. There are also features called "4EVER" with the singer Esthero, who should be known from the band's first two albums, "Dopeness" with the Korean rapper / singer CL, and "All Around The World" with the rappers Phife Dawg, Posdnuos and Ali Shaheed Muhammad can be heard on the album. Shortly after the album was released, the band plus Jessica Reynoso started their "Masters of the Sun Tour" in Europe, before they expect further dates worldwide in 2019. The album was not a success, only in Switzerland and France it could place in the charts.
