Angeles City ( Tagalog : Lungsod ng Angeles ; Kapampangan : Ciudad ning Angeles ) is a city on the Philippine island of Luzon . It is located approx. 80 (road) km northwest of the capital Manila on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX, connection to Manila) and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX, connection to Subic Bay in the southwest and Tarlac in the north). Neighboring communities are Mabalacat in the north, Mexico in the east, San Fernando and Bacolor in the south and Porac in the south and west. Approx. 26 km west of Angeles City is the Pinatubo volcano , approx. 16 km east-northeast of the long-extinct volcano Mt. Arayat . (The distances and directions refer to the centrally located and best-known district of Balibago.) The district "Marisol Village" has now been renamed "Ninoy Aquino". Metro Angeles is the fourth largest of twelve metropolitan areas in the Philippines with 915,365 inhabitants (2007) on an area of 581.07 km².
history
In 1796 the mayor of San Fernando , Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda, together with his wife and some supporters, founded a new settlement, which was named Kuliat because of the local grape variety . This settlement first became a district ( barrio ) of San Fernando until it was independent and renamed Angeles in 1829.
The city remained relatively small until the end of World War II , after which the population rose sharply. During the Vietnam War, Clark Air Base was the most important replenishment base in Southeast Asia. The US Air Force was stationed in the city until 1991.
Pinatubo eruption and impact
On June 15, 1991, around 900 people died in an eruption of the Pinatubo volcano and a quarter of a million people lost their homes. The US Army then cleared both the bases in Angeles City and those in Subic Bay . The soldiers stationed there left the country. The Philippine Senate did not extend the lease agreements (military base agreement) with the USA that expired in 1991. Angeles City's economy has long been weakened by the destruction of infrastructure and the lack of economic strength of the military base.
Current situation
The former air base was converted into an economic zone; The airfield became the Clark International Airport , which was named after Diosdado Macapagal . Tourism is picking up again, although both the prices and the crime rate are very high.
Entertainment district
In addition to the so-called jeepneys and countless fast food restaurants, the Americans in Angeles City have left a huge entertainment district, especially in the districts of Malabañas and Balibago. On Fields Avenue, gogo bars , pubs, beer gardens and hotels are lined up over a length of around 2 km . Angeles experienced the biggest boom in 1992, when the ruling mayor of Manila closed all bars in the entertainment district of Ermita . Some of these moved to Angeles City, 80 km away. The crime is high. It is estimated that over 30,000 women work in the city's clubs and bars. The former US air force base "Clark Air Base" has been converted into an economy zone. The "Clark International Airport" handled more than 1,500,000 passengers in 2017.
