Ruthless Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ruthless Records is an independent label from Los Angeles . It was founded in 1987 by Eazy-E and Jerry Heller and is considered the birthplace of gangsta rap .

The music label initially promoted local artists like the rappers Dr. Dre , Ice Cube , MC Ren and DJ Yella , but also R'n'B singers like Michel'le . A year later, Eazy-E founded the NWA group . In the following years Above the Law , Bone Thugs-N-Harmony , The DOC , BG Knocc Out , Gangsta Dresta , and JJ Fad also belonged to the label. The group Black Eyed Peas also signed their first contract with Ruthless, but were never published because their lyrics and demeanor were too positive and peaceful.

After Eazy-E died of AIDS in 1995, the label was taken over by his wife Tomica Wright. Today Ruthless Records is a sub-label of Atlantic Records , which in turn belong to the Warner Music Group .
