Marcus Jamal Hopson (born July 18, 1985 in Panorama City , Los Angeles , California ), better known as Hopsin , is an American rapper , producer and actor . He is the founder of the American independent record label Funk Volume , where he also published his records until he left the label after a dispute with the manager Dame Ritter.

Life

Hopsin attended James Monroe High School in Panorama City . In his senior year 2004 he left school to start a career as a musician.

Hopsin's first album Gazing at the Moonlight was released on October 26th, 2009. He was praised for his creativity by many American hip-hop magazines. However, critics criticized the extremely controversial content, which was also repeated on his following album RAW with tracks such as Kill Her or Sag my Pants .

The most striking feature of Hopsin is probably his preference for colored contact lenses. For example, he wears completely white lenses in videos for Sag my Pants and How You Like Me Now . He says he uses them to differentiate himself from other rappers. Before he used the contact lenses, when he performed alongside other rappers, people didn't remember his appearance until he pointed out his songs to them. His former label colleague SwizZz also uses this stylistic device, but wears black contact lenses throughout, which extend over the entire eyeball.

What also sets Hopsin apart is that he takes many facets of his music and its presentation into his own hands: texts, beats and also the videos, most of which are created under his direction. Hopsin is extremely dissatisfied with the American hip-hop world, which he makes clear in his song Sag my Pants : "[...] I have no favorite rappers, because all you suck". In this track he goes into the rappers Lil Wayne , Soulja Boy , Drake , Rick Ross and the label Ruthless Records founded by Eazy-E by making them look ridiculous.

Funk Volume

After the success for Hopsin under Ruthless Records did not materialize due to a lack of promotion, he decided to continue independently with his own label, namely Funk Volume. This was founded by Hopsin and later taken over by Damien "Dame" Ritter. His second studio album, RAW , was the first funk volume release. In addition to SwizZz, the brother of Dame Ritter, Dizzy Wright from Las Vegas has also been under contract with Funk Volume since the end of 2011 . Jarren Benton also joined the team in the summer of 2012. At the beginning of 2016, Hopsin officially confirmed on Instagram that he had left Funk Volume because of a dispute with co-founder Damien Ritter and that his new music label was Undercover Prodigy, which was previously only known as a fashion label.
