The 2001 MTV Video Music Awards were held on September 6, 2001 at the Metropolitan Opera House (Lincoln Center) in New York City . Jamie Foxx was the host .

The highlights of the show were the appearance of Michael Jackson with * NSYNC and the appearance of the singer Britney Spears , who sang her hit I'm a Slave 4 U with a living snake. In addition, Missy Elliott , Timberland and Janet Jackson remembered the recently deceased soul singer Aaliyah in a speech .

The winner of the evening was Fatboy Slim with a total of six Moonman for his video Weapon of Choice , in which the actor Christopher Walken danced. * NSYNC won a total of five Moonman for their video Pop .
