Timberland is the 1973 registered brand name of the internationally known US shoe and outdoor equipment manufacturer The Timberland Company from Stratham , New Hampshire .

Company history

The company's history goes back to the Jewish shoemaker Nathan Swartz, who was born in Odessa ( Russian Empire ) in 1902 and who emigrated to the United States in 1913 , where he bought shares in a shoe factory in Massachusetts in 1952 and took it over completely in 1955. The company called The Abington Shoe Company initially mainly produced contract goods, developed production methods for waterproof footwear in the 1960s and added a waterproof boot to its range in 1973 under the name Timberland (German: Waldland , Forst ) that sold so well that the company renamed itself The Timberland Company in 1978 .

Since the late 1960s, the company has been based in Stratham, New Hampshire.

International expansion began in the 1980s . Nathan Swartz's son Sidney took over management in 1986. The first Timberland store opened in Newport, Rhode Island, that same year . In 1987 the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange .

Timberland has been a lifestyle company with an extensive product portfolio since the 1990s . The company concentrates on shoes, clothing and accessories for men, women (since 1990) and children (since 1996) in the field of outdoor sports .

From 1998 to 2011 the listed family business was headed by Jeffrey Swartz, grandson of Nathan Swartz.

sale

At the end of 2011, Timberland was acquired by Greensboro , North Carolina- based VF Corporation and incorporated into their range of brands.

Company profile

Timberland branch in Darmstadt

The Timberland brand is best known for robust lace-up leather boots and sporty leather moccasins and boat shoes . The typical Timberland boots with rubber soles and branded logo are not only popular for everyday use and use in sports, but are also valued by young people from the hip-hop scene in New York and New England and construction workers . The company now produces shoe models and items of clothing for various areas of everyday life.

Part of the company philosophy is the understanding of the "outside" as the opposite of the "inside". The products should therefore be correspondingly hard-wearing. Social engagement and environmental protection are central to Timberland's corporate culture . All employees receive 40 hours of paid vacation annually to get involved in initiatives such as Earth Day and Serv-a-Palooza and to do good, true to the Timberland motto “Make it Better”. For these initiatives, which the US brand initiates and regards as its duty and social responsibility ( Corporate Social Responsibility ), it has received several awards. The company is considered a good employer in the USA , for example because of awards from Forbes Magazine (“100 Best Companies to Work For”).

The beige and yellow Yellow Boot for men was the first product under the Timberland name in 1973. Since then, the boot has been available in numerous colors and designs. The water-repellent upper is welded to the sole using a specially developed method and not sewn, which is why no water can penetrate the shoe between the sole and the upper (directly soled). In Germany, the shoe can therefore be sold as waterproof. Hand-sewn moccasins and boat shoes made of leather with rubber soles were added to the product range at the end of the 1970s. There are now a large number of different Timberland shoe models, including hiking boots, casual shoes, formal lace-up shoes, work shoes, sandals, as well as women's and children's shoes.

The rapper and producer Timbaland named himself after the beige boots made by Timberland.

In April 2007 the Timberland Company bought the Ipath company , which mainly produces shoes for the skateboarding sector.

In 2010 Timberland donated funds to the Haiti Foundation run by musician Wyclef Jean as part of the Earthkeeper program .

criticism

A Danish organization was commissioned to visit farms, slaughterhouses, tanneries in Brazil and India. Catastrophic working conditions and cruelty to animals were found. Timberland performed best in the ethics test.
