VF Corporation is a US apparel company headquartered in Greensboro , North Carolina . The company is listed in the S&P 500 share index. VF Corporation is one of the largest apparel companies in the world and the market leader in jeans , lingerie, workwear and backpacks.

history

The company was originally founded by John Barbey, a banker , and a group of investors in October 1899 in the City of Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania as the Reading Glove and Mitten Manufacturing Company in Wyomissing , Pennsylvania . The company made gloves , including silk . It started with $ 11,000 and 100 square meters. In 1911 Barbey paid off the remaining seven partners. In 1913 Barbey changed the company name to Schuylkill Silk Mills . 1917, 1914, launched laundry division was for fine ladies underwear in Vanity Fair baptized. In 1919, the company called in Vanity Fair Silk Mills, Inc. has to offer. In the 1920s there was rapid growth and the company was also not affected by the global economic crisis . Over time, new materials such as viscose (from 1930), nylon (from 1940) or Lycra (from 1960) were successfully processed. The brands Wrangler and Rustler (jeans), Jantzen and JanSport and Red Kap ( workwear ) were added to the portfolio in 1986 through the purchase of the Blue Bell Holding Company . In 1998, various lingerie brands were acquired and the company's headquarters were relocated from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, to Greensboro, North Carolina , where it is still located today. In 2000 it was taken over by Eastpak (luggage), Chic , HIS and Gitano (jeans) and the time of the bankruptcy near The North Face , Inc. (outdoor clothing). In 2003, VF Corporation bought the sportswear manufacturer Nautica , which also included the contemporary brand John Varvatos . The latter was sold on by VFC to a British investment company in 2012 . In 2004 the Italian sportswear label Napapijri was added. The range was expanded in 2007 with the sports and fan clothing manufacturer Majestic Athletic as well as the jeans manufacturer 7 for all mankind and the women's sports clothing brand lucy . In 2009, the outdoor segment had the largest share of sales for the first time with 38 percent. In mid-2011, VF Corporation announced that it would buy the outdoor specialist Timberland for $ 2 billion. The company operates around 70 outlets in the USA under the name vf Outlet , mostly in larger factory outlet centers , where various of the Group's own brands are offered for sale at reduced prices.

In October 2017, VF acquired the Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company .

criticism

In March 2013, at a factory in Bangladesh that also produces clothes for the VF Corporation, seven trade unionists protesting against the illegal mass layoffs - including a pregnant woman - were injured with iron pipes and nailed batons and employees of the Clean Clothes Campaign were arrested had visited the protesting staff on site. The factory is known for its good relationship with the local police and its brutal crackdown on critics.
