geography

Wyomissing is located in eastern Pennsylvania and borders the city of Reading , which is the administrative seat of Berks County.

history

The first inhabitants of the area around Wyomissing were Indians of the Lenni Lenape tribe (Delaware), who lived on the banks of Wyomissing Creek. It is believed that the name "Wyomissing" comes from the language of these Indians, although the meaning remains unclear.

In 1896, today's Wyomissing began to take shape when Reading timber merchant Thomas P. Merritt acquired six hundred acres of land. In the same year, the German immigrants Ferdinand Thun and Henry Janssen opened the Thun & Janssen textile machine factory in Wyomissing. Due to the agricultural and industrial development, the settlement increased in size, which led to the establishment of the Wyomissing community on July 2, 1906. The municipal council met for the first time on September 14, 1906 and elected Ferdinand Thun as its president.

In the last few decades mainly residential and commercial areas have emerged on the formerly agricultural areas of the municipality. The cultivation of the last farmland was given up in the early 1990s in favor of the development of an industrial area. In January 2002, the neighboring Wyomissing Hills was incorporated into the Wyomissing community. The population of Wyomissing rose from 8,587 to 11,155 based on the results of the 2000 census .
