The Berks County is a county in the US state of Pennsylvania . At the 2010 census , the county had 411,442 residents and a population density of 168 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Reading .

The county is located in the northwest suburban area of Philadelphia and has an area of 2,242 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. The following counties border Berks County:

history

Berks County was formed on March 11, 1752 from Chester County , Lancaster County and Philadelphia Counties and named after Berkshire , England . The Berks County was predominantly settled by Protestant Germans in the 18th century.

There is a National Historic Site in the county , the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site . Three places have the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Gruber Wagon Works , the Keim Homestead and the Conrad Weiser Homestead . 134 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 18, 2018).
