history

Berks County was formed on March 11, 1752 from Chester County , Lancaster County and Philadelphia Counties and named after Berkshire , England . The Berks County was predominantly settled by Protestant Germans in the 18th century.

There is a National Historic Site in the county , the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site . Three places have the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Gruber Wagon Works , the Keim Homestead and the Conrad Weiser Homestead . 134 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 18, 2018).
