The North Face ( English for The North Face ') is an on outdoor - clothing specialized brand of the US-based VF Corporation especially for jackets, fleece products, shoes, tents and backpacks. In 2019, a product placement from The North Face with images was found on Wikipedia .

history

The company was founded in 1966 in San Francisco by Douglas Tompkins . Originally, Tompkins had founded a mountaineering school and ran a mountaineering equipment store in North Beach, San Francisco. In 1968 the store moved to Berkeley on the east bank of San Francisco Bay and began producing its own brand, The North Face . The name plays with the association that in the northern hemisphere the north face of a mountain is the hardest and most difficult to conquer. The logo is modeled on the striking rock silhouette of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park .

Tompkins sold the company in 1968 and began building the Esprit Holdings Limited brand . The current owner of The North Face is the US clothing company VF Corporation .

The North Face is regarded as the global market leader and global brand in the field of outdoor clothing .

Corporate responsibility

In November 2004 the Stiftung Warentest tested 14 functional jackets and asked the companies about their corporate responsibility . For The North Face it was found that there are “approaches” to produce the jackets in a fair, socially and ecologically correct manner.

In August 2012, the Stiftung Warentest published another test of functional jackets. The CSR engagement was rated 'poor' this time.

Controversy

In 2019, the advertising agency Leo Burnett, on behalf of The North Face, replaced the article images of numerous Wikipedia articles with images that featured the company's logo prominently. The aim of this campaign was to be as well positioned as possible in the Google search results. After they became known, the pictures were removed from the articles by Wikipedia authors. The Wikimedia Foundation criticized the attempt to position surreptitious advertising.
