Jansport ( spelling : JanSport ) is the world's largest manufacturer of backpacks , based in the USA .

history

In 1967 the hippies Murray Pletz, Skip Yowell and Jan Lewis laid the foundation for this outdoor brand by founding a family-owned artisanal business in Seattle , Washington . Murray had the patent for an aluminum backpack frame and Jan was very good at sewing. After graduation, Murray promised to marry his girlfriend Jan and to name the company after her if she made a successful backpack. They were successful and the brand name JanSport was born.

At first they only produced backpacks for mountaineers. Then they expanded the range to include bags , leisure backpacks and luggage . JanSport has been part of VF Corporation since 1986 . JanSport grants a 30-year guarantee on its products (backpacks, bags, luggage).

JanSport is headquartered at parent company VF Outdoors headquarters in San Leandro , California , where JanSport shares offices with sister companies Napapijri and The North Face . Together with The North Face, JanSport has a share of almost 50% of the backpacks sold annually in the USA.
