Joseph Kahn (director)
Joseph Kahn (born October 12, 1972 in Busan , South Korea ) is an American director of Korean descent who mainly shoots music videos , but also TV commercials and films .
Life
Kahn was born in Busan, South Korea and moved to Jersey Village , Texas , a suburb of Houston, when he was three . He spent part of his childhood in Livorno , Italy before moving back to Texas. In his youth he made music videos for local artists. After high school in Jersey Village 1990, he went to the New York University belonging Tisch School of the Arts , but he left after one year to turn to music videos.
Kahn lives in Los Angeles .
Career
Music videos
From 1990 onwards, Kahn made dozens of low-budget videos , in which he simultaneously acted as cameraman , film editor and production designer . In 1995 he signed a contract with Visages Films and became increasingly sought after. He shot videos for artists like Public Enemy , Aaliyah , Korn , Bryan Adams and the Backstreet Boys . In 1999 Kahn founded his own production company SuperMega Media with Chris Lee . He now made music videos for other famous music artists, such as Dr. Dre , Snoop Dogg , DMX , Mariah Carey , Christina Aguilera , 50 Cent , Britney Spears , Destiny's Child , Kelly Clarkson , Ashlee Simpson , Muse , Ciara , U2 , The Chemical Brothers , blink-182 , Chris Brown , Eminem , TLC , Katy Perry , Moby , Kesha , George Michael , Korn , Taylor Swift , The Black Eyed Peas , Janet Jackson , Lady Gaga , BoA , Gwen Stefani , Brandy , AKB48 , The Pussycat Dolls , Kylie Minogue , Maroon 5 and OneRepublic .
For his work as a music video director, Kahn received various awards at the MTV Video Music Awards . The video for the song Without Me by rapper Eminem was particularly successful, winning MTV's Video of the Year Award in 2002 and the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 2003 .

Kahn has shot advertisements for the companies Acura , Bacardi , BMW , Hewlett-Packard , Gillette , Vodafone , Budweiser , Asics , Renault , Mazda , Coors Light , NASCAR , Saab , Ford and Sony-PlayStation . His 2004 Fox / NASCAR advertisement won a Clio Award in the Visual Effects category .
Movies
In 2004 Kahn made his film debut as a director of the action film Hart am Limit with Ice Cube . In 2011, he released his self-financed horror - comedy Detention - detention can be fatal . In 2015 he directed a short film called Power / Rangers as a fan contribution to the Power Rangers franchise; Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der Beek , who also wrote the script, were involved as actors. His film Battle Rap -Film Bodied was co-produced by Eminem and others and premiered in 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival . Kahn also directed two episodes of the Sweet / Vicious television series and one episode of the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend series .
