The Pussycat Dolls are a dance and music ensemble from Los Angeles that was founded in 1995 by Robin Antin and Christina Applegate , among others . From 2003, they served as a brand for a music project in which the front singer Nicole Scherzinger was the focus. In September 2005 they released their first album PCD and had their biggest hit with the single Don't Cha . After various other successes, they were dissolved in 2010. In 2019 the group started a reunion .
Band history
Dance revue
The Pussycat Dolls were founded in 1995 by the choreographers Robin Antin , Carla Kama and the actress Christina Applegate . The dance group, which mainly appears in underwear or pin-up costumes, has performed regularly in Johnny Depp's Viper Room since 1995 . There has also been another revue since 2003 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas . Numerous guest stars appeared in their shows, including P! Nk , Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani . The revue was temporarily represented in public by Carmen Electra .
Pussycat Doll Carmit Bachar , who was friends with Gwen Stefani and also appeared as a dancer in some no-doubt videos, suggested to the singer in 2002 to appear as a guest at the dance revue. Gwen Stefani loved the group. She saw their potential as a music act and eventually called her record company Interscope Records . As a result, Interscope boss Ron Fair and music producer Jimmy Iovine joined the group. In collaboration with founder Robin Antin, however, they were looking for more singers for the group. In a casting , Nicole Scherzinger , Melody Thornton and Kaya Jones finally joined the group. The latter left the group a year later. Since the Pussycat Dolls now consisted of about twelve members, they were shortened to six - Scherzinger, Bachar and Thornton as main singers and Sutta , Roberts and Wyatt as background singers .
Music career
In the 2003 sequel, Charlie's Angels - Full Power , the Pussycat Dolls had a brief guest appearance as "The Treasure Chest Dancers".
At the beginning of 2004 the newly formed Pussycat Dolls made both the song We Went As Far As We Felt Like Going from the soundtrack to Big Sharks and the cover Sway , the title song to the box office hit May I ask? , aware of oneself. This was followed in September 2005 by the music album PCD, produced by Timbaland , will.i.am , Cee-Lo Green and Rich Harrison , among others . The pre-released single Don't Cha , a collaboration with rapper Busta Rhymes , reached number 1 in the singles charts in Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain and helped the band to break through worldwide. The follow-up singles Stickwitu , Beep and Buttons also achieved top positions and stayed at the top of the national single charts in Great Britain and Austria for several weeks.
In autumn 2006 I Don't Need a Man from the album PCD was released in Europe. At the same time, Wait a Minute was published in the USA. At the MTV Video Music Awards 2006 on August 31, 2006, the Pussycat Dolls received the Moonman in the Best Dance Video category for their music video for Buttons with Snoop Dogg .
In November 2006, it took the Pussycat Dolls on a major headlining tour through Germany for the first time . Together with Rihanna they completed the PCD World Tour in partly sold-out halls in Munich, Frankfurt, Böblingen and Cologne.
In March 2007 the single Wait a Minute was released in Germany. A seventh member of the band was cast in the US TV show Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll . The winner was Asia Nitollano, who had to prevail in the final against two other competitors. Allegedly Asia decided to start a solo career instead of participating in the Pussycat Dolls.
In early March 2008, Carmit Bachar left the band for an Interscope sponsored development deal for their project "The Zodiac Show".
The second album of the Pussycat Dolls, which is called Doll Domination , was released on September 19, 2008. The first single from it, When I Grow Up , was released on August 29, 2008. Rodney Jerkins , Polow da Don and Timbaland worked on the album . Despite worldwide top 10 placements, it sold just over 1 million copies worse than the debut album PCD .
In spring 2009 Nicole Scherzinger sang the song Jai Ho! With the Indian composer AR Rahman . (You Are My Destiny) for the movie Slumdog Millionaire . This was under AR Rahman & the Pussycat Dolls feat. Nicole Scherzinger released as a single.
At the end of 2009, founder Robin Antin announced that some members would be leaving the Pussycat Dolls. On January 28, 2010, Jessica Sutta confirmed her exit in an interview with E! News and the Life & Style Magazine. On February 26, 2010, Kimberly Wyatt also announced her departure. A day later, Ashley Roberts also announced that she was leaving the group.
Melody Thornton has not yet made an official statement about a possible exit and mentioned in an interview with Nicole Scherzinger that she was the only remaining member. However, Wyatt later confirmed Thornton's exit from the group.
On December 5, 2010, Scherzinger announced in an interview that she had decided to leave the band in order to concentrate fully on her solo career. After Scherzinger left the band, there were initially several line-up changes. When a final line-up was finally found in early 2013 with Lauren Bennett , Paula Van Oppen, Simone Battle, Natasha Slayton and Emmalyn Estrada, Robin Antin announced that this line-up would no longer appear as Pussycat Dolls, but would form a new girl group as the GRL .
Since 2019: Reunion
The Pussycat Dolls have been performing again since November 2019, but without Melody Thornton . Around ten years after their last appearance, the five remaining members appeared at the English X-Factor finale and introduced the new song React , which was released in February 2020. In 2020 the group should go on tour.

- Ashley Roberts (born September 14, 1981 in Phoenix , Arizona , United States) used to take dance lessons in Los Angeles and has already appeared in two small commercials. Her father was the drummer for The Mamas and the Papas . She released her first solo single Invasion with Lil Wayne on the Internet .
- Nicole Scherzinger (born June 29, 1978 in Honolulu , Hawaii , United States) is an ex-member of the US pop group Eden's Crush , which emerged from the American version of the talent show Popstars , but broke up in 2002 after just one year. In December 2010, Scherzinger announced that he would be leaving the band as the last member of the line-up that had existed since 2003.
- Jessica Sutta (born May 15, 1982 in Miami , Florida , United States) studied dance at the New World School of Arts. After that she was a dancer for the Miami Heat basketball team .
- Kimberly Wyatt (born February 4, 1982 in Warrensburg , Missouri , United States) was a dancer on a luxury cruise ship after high school. She also worked as a choreographer for Nick Lachey .
