Musical and content

Buttons is a hip hop / R&B / pop song with a length of 3:46. The remix version with Snoop Dogg is 3:53 minutes long. The song, written in four-four time and in D minor , has a moderate tempo , the vocal range extends from G3 to A4. Furthermore, oriental echoes come to the fore in the song. In terms of text, Buttons deals with the longing to undress. The female I-person asks a male counterpart to help her open her clothes (“loosen up my buttons baby”). The ego offers itself to the male admirer as an object (“this could be yours”). Snoop Dogg's contribution takes this up and takes a position as a desirable man who wants to be seduced.

reception

Buttons received mixed reviews. Vicky Butscher from Laut.de thinks the song is a "twiddle-twiddle part". It “reminds me of other R'n'B ladies who have managed it much better,” the critic continued. Miriam Zendle of Digital Spy gave the song a five-star rating and added, "As horrible as the debut single Don't Cha , there's just nothing to please in buttons ." Spence D. of IGN Entertainment wrote, "Yes, it (Buttons) is familiar and funky, but it doesn't present anything new in the area of female soul pop ”.

Billboard lists Buttons at number 6 of the best summer songs of 2006. Rolling Stone put Buttons at number 96 of the 100 best songs of 2006.

Music video

The filming of the Buttons music video was performed by Francis Lawrence and lasted three days. The choreography was designed by the group's founder, Robin Antin , and Mikey Minden. Scenes from behind the scenes of the video shoot are included on the live album DVD Live from London . The video starts with Snoop Dogg, who recites his verse while Nicole Scherzinger dances seductively around him. When the first chorus begins, the Pussycat Dolls, wearing skimpy black dresses, walk through a hall and a tubular tunnel. In the second chorus, the members dance on a horizontal bar. Towards the end of the chorus, Scherzinger separates from the group and sings alone between glittering curtains and then dances on a chair. Four more chairs appear and the rest of the members dance on them as well. When Snoop Dog's verse starts, the Pussycat Dolls can be seen walking towards him. The women keep dancing while the floor is covered in flames and smoke. The video ends with the pussycat dolls walking away from the camera.

The music video was nominated in the categories of Best Dance Video and Best Choreography in a Video at the MTV Video Music Awards 2006 and won an award in the former category. The Canadian music broadcaster Much listed the video at number 4 of the 50 Sexiest Music Videos of All-Time .
