Richard Schell (born May 15, 1810 in Rhinebeck , New York , † November 10, 1879 in New York City ) was an American politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives in 1874 and 1875 .

Career

Richard Schell was born and raised in Rhinebeck about two years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He completed his preliminary studies. Then he went about commercial business. In 1830 he moved to New York City, where he worked as a wholesaler for dry goods . He then sat in the New York Senate in 1857 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

Schell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in a by-election on December 7, 1874 in the ninth constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the death of David B. Mellish . He retired from the after March 3, 1875 Congress of.

After his time at the congress he went back to his commercial business. He died on November 10, 1879 in New York City and was buried in the Old Dutch Cemetery in Rhinebeck.
