William McManus
William Telemachus McManus (* 1780 in Brunswick , New York , † January 18, 1835 there ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1825 and 1827 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Telemachus McManus was born and raised in Brunswick during the War of Independence . He received a scientific education. Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1817 and then began practicing in Troy . Between 1815 and 1818 he served as a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Rensselaer County and between 1818 and 1821 as a district attorney. Politically, he belonged to the Adams faction .
In the 1824 congressional elections for the 19th Congress , McManus was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth electoral district of New York , where he succeeded James L. Hogeboom on March 4, 1825 . Since he on a run again in 1826 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1827 Congress of.
After his time at Congress, he went back to his practice as a lawyer. In 1832 he was active as a soil speculator. In this regard, he was one of the co-founders of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company . In 1833 he went with his son Robert and daughter Jane as well as a group of German settlers to Texas , which was then still part of Mexico . The project failed when the German settlers refused to go to Matagorda . He then returned to Brunswick with his daughter in 1834, where he died soon after on January 18, 1835. His son Robert stayed in Texas and became a wealthy planter.

William Telemachus McManus was the son of Mary (1751-1834) and Hugh McManus (1747-1826). He married Catharina Wheeler Coons (1784–1839), daughter of Elizabeth Wheeler and Philip Coons, in Greenbush (New York) on February 24, 1805. The couple had four children together:
