Joseph Patrick Addabbo (born March 17, 1925 in Ozone Park , Queens , New York City , †  April 10, 1986 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1986 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Addabbo attended public schools in his home country as well as the City College of New York . After a subsequent law degree at St. John's Law School and his admission to the bar in 1947, he began to work in this profession in Ozone Park. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1948 and 1959 he was president of the Ozone Park Men's Association ; from 1956 to 1958 he also headed the Ferrini Welfare League of Catholic Charities .

In the 1960 congressional elections , Addabbo was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Albert H. Bosch, who had since resigned, on January 3, 1961 . After twelve re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on April 10, 1986 . During this time, the Vietnam War , the end of the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair took place . Addabo represented the fifth district until 1963, then the seventh and then the sixth district of his state until 1983. During the 1980s he was chairman of the Defense Spending Subcommittee. In that capacity, he was a harsh critic of President Ronald Reagan's fiscal policy . Above all, he criticized the massive increase in the defense budget.

Addabbo had been in poor health since the end of 1984. He suffered from kidney disease, to which he succumbed on April 10, 1986. He had previously been in a coma for a month after a collapse.
