Gary Ackerman

Gary Leonard Ackerman (* 19th November 1942 in New York ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and was 1983-2013 member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the State of New York .

biography

Gary Leonard Ackerman was born in New York City to Max and Eva Ackerman. He grew up in Flushing , a neighborhood in Borough Queens in New York . After graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School , he studied at Queens College (graduated in 1965). He then worked as a teacher for the subjects of social studies , math and journalism at a junior high school in Queens. Ackerman wanted to take special unpaid leave due to the birth of his daughter in 1969, but the school administration denied him this. He then sued the school administration and got right in court. In 1970 he founded the Queens Tribune , a free weekly newspaper. He served as editor and publisher until his election to the New York Senate .

He was a member of the New York Senate from 1979 until his election to the US House of Representatives. In a by-election in 1983, he was elected to succeed Benjamin S. Rosenthal . He represented New York's fifth congressional district , which includes parts of Queens, Long Island and Nassau County . He defended his seat in fourteen subsequent elections. In the House of Representatives, Ackerman served on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Financial Services . For reasons of age, he decided not to run again in the 2012 election and left office on January 3, 2013.

Ackerman is of Jewish faith . He lives in Roslyn Heights , Nassau County and is married to Rita Gale Tewel. The couple have two sons and a daughter.
