Archibald Meserole Bliss

Archibald Meserole Bliss (born January 25, 1838 in Brooklyn , New York , † March 19, 1923 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1883 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Archibald Meserole Bliss was born about eight years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War in the then still independent city of Brooklyn and grew up there. During this time he attended community schools there. Between 1864 and 1867 he served as Alderman in Brooklyn, serving as President of the Board of Aldermen in 1866 . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party at that time . In 1867 he ran unsuccessfully for the post of mayor of Brooklyn. He attended the Republican National Conventions as a delegate in 1864 and 1868 . Between 1868 and 1878 he was President and Vice President of the Bushwick Railroad Co. He was also director of the New York and Long Island Bridge Co. He was a member of the Brooklyn Board of Water Commissioners in 1871 and 1872 . In 1872 he took part as a delegate at the Liberal National Convention . During the following period he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1874 , Bliss was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the fourth constituency of New York, where he succeeded Philip S. Crooke on March 4, 1875 . He was re-elected three times in a row. Since he on a run again in 1882 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1883 Congress of. In 1884 he ran for a seat in Congress in the fifth constituency of New York. After a successful election, he succeeded Nicholas Muller on March 4, 1885 . He was re-elected once. He also took part in the Democratic National Conventions in 1876, 1880, 1884, and 1888 .

He then went into real estate business in Washington DC until his death on March 19, 1923. His body was buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery , Brooklyn.
