Henry B. Cowles

Henry Booth Cowles (born March 18, 1798 in Hartford , Connecticut , † May 17, 1873 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1829 and 1831 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Booth Cowles was born in Hartford in the late 18th century. His family moved to Dutchess County in 1809 . He graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1816 . Cowles studied law and began practicing law in Putnam County upon receiving his license to practice law. Between 1826 and 1828 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Politically, Cowles belonged to the anti-Jacksonian faction . In the congressional election of 1828 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Aaron Ward on March 4, 1829 . He retired from the after 3 March 1831 Congress of. In 1834 he moved to New York City, where he worked as a lawyer until his death on May 17, 1873. His body was buried in the Rhinebeck cemetery.
