Ezekiel Gilbert

Ezekiel Gilbert (born March 25, 1756 in Middletown , Colony of Connecticut , † July 17, 1841 in Hudson , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1793 and 1797 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ezekiel Gilbert grew up during the British colonial era. He pursued classical studies and graduated from Yale College in 1778 . Gilbert studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Hudson. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1789 and 1790 . Politically, he belonged to the pro-administration group . In the congressional elections of 1792 Gilbert was elected in the sixth electoral district of New York in the US House of Representatives, which was still in Philadelphia at that time , where he succeeded James Gordon on March 4, 1793 . Two years later he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives as a federalist . He retired from the after March 3, 1797 Congress of. He then returned to practice and was again a member of the New York State Assembly in 1800 and 1801. Between 1813 and 1815 he worked as a clerk in Columbia County .
