Charles Goodwin Bennett (born December 11, 1863 in Brooklyn , New York , † May 25, 1914 ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Goodwin Bennett was born during the Civil War in the then still separate city of Brooklyn and grew up there. During this time he attended public schools. He graduated from Broogklyn High School and from New York Law School in 1882 . He was admitted to the bar that same year and then began practicing in Brooklyn. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In 1892 he was defeated in his candidacy for a seat in Congress. Two years later , Bennett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of New York , where he succeeded John H. Graham on March 4, 1895 . After a successful re-election he suffered in 1898 a defeat in his renewed candidacy and retired after the March 3, 1899 Congress of.

He served as Secretary in the US Senate from January 29, 1900 until his resignation on March 3, 1913 . He then returned to Brooklyn, where he retired. He died on May 25, 1914 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery .
