Obadiah Titus

Obadiah Titus (born January 20, 1789 in Millbrook , New York , † September 2, 1854 in Washington , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Obadiah Titus was born in Millbrook about five years after the War of Independence ended . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in the Washington town of Dutchess County . During the British-American War he served as a captain in the infantry . After the war he was elected district judge. In 1828 he was elected sheriff in Dutchess County. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1836 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Abraham Bockee on March 4, 1837 . In 1838 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1839 . Then he worked as a lawyer again. He died in Washington on September 2, 1854 and was buried in the Nine Partners (Friends) Burial Ground in Millbrook.
