Cornelius Corneliusen Schoonmaker (born June 1745 in Shawangunk (now Wallkill ), Province of New York , † spring 1796 there ) was an American politician . Between 1791 and 1793 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Cornelius Corneliusen Schoonmaker grew up during the British colonial period and received a modest education. He became a surveyor ( suveyor ) and worked in agriculture. During the Revolutionary War he sat on the Committees of Vigilance and Safety and between 1777 and 1790 in the New York State Assembly . During this time he ratified the United States Constitution on January 8, 1788 . Politically, he was an opponent of the then federal government under President George Washington ( anti-administration faction ). In the congressional elections of 1790 Schoomaker was elected in the fourth constituency of New York in the US House of Representatives, which was then still in Philadelphia , where he succeeded John Hathorn on March 4, 1791 . He died in Shawangunk in the spring of 1796 and was buried in the Old Shawangunk Churchyard in Brunynswick. Congressman Marius Schoonmaker was his grandson.
