John Hathorn (born January 9, 1749 in Wilmington , Delaware Colony , † February 19, 1825 in Warwick , New York ) was an American politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1789 and 1791 and between 1795 and 1797 .

Career

John Hathorn grew up during the British colonial period and enjoyed a good education. He worked as a surveyor ( surveyor working) and teachers. Hathorn moved to Warwick, New York. He was active in the revolutionary movement. He served as a captain in the colonial militia . On February 7, 1776, he became a colonel in the Fourth Orange County Regiment . He held this rank throughout the rest of the War of Independence . After the end of the war he was promoted to brigadier general on September 26, 1786 and on October 8, 1793 to major general in the National Guard of New York .

Hathorn also pursued a political career. He sat in the New York State Assembly from 1778, 1780, 1782 and 1785, 1795 and 1805 . During this time he held the post of speaker in 1783 and 1784 . Between 1786 and 1790 and between 1799 and 1803 he was a member of the New York Senate . He was a member of the Council of Appointment in 1787 and 1789 . In December 1788 he was elected to the Continental Congress , but he did not take part in any meeting. Politically, he was an opponent of the then federal government under President George Washington ( anti-administration faction ). In the congressional elections of 1789 Hathorn was elected in the fourth constituency of New York to the US House of Representatives, which was still in session in New York City , where he began his service on March 4, 1789 as the first member of this district. In 1790 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1791 . His candidacy for the 3rd Congress was also unsuccessful. As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . He was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in 1794 and succeeded Peter Van Gaasbeck on March 4, 1795 . After an unsuccessful candidacy in 1796 , he left the Congress on March 3, 1797.

Then he went about commercial business. He died on February 19, 1825 in Warwick and was then buried on the family estate. His body was later reburied in Warwick Cemetery .

Honors

The US Liberty freighter SS John Hathorn was named in his honor.
