Joseph Morelle

Joseph D. Morelle (born April 29, 1957 in Utica , New York ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He is a member of the United States House of Representatives for the 25th Congressional District of New York . Morelle won these general elections on November 6, 2018.

Career

Morelle received his BA in Political Science from the State University of New York at Geneseo . His professional experience includes serving as President and CEO of MMI Technologies, Incorporated and as an administrator at the Anthony L. Jordan Health Center. Morelle's political experience outside of the New York State Legislature includes serving as an Appointment to the Council of Young Political Leaders, District Representative in Monroe County, and Chair of the Irondequoit Democratic Committee. Morelle served as his party's majority leader in the New York State Assembly and represented District 136 from 1991 to 2018.

On January 27, 2015, Morelle was nominated to replace Sheldon Silver (D) as speaker of the New York State Assembly. Silver resigned as a speaker on February 2, 2015. Morelle served in office until Carl Heastie (D) was elected to office on February 3, 2015.

After the death of longtime MP Louise Slaughter , Joseph Morelle was nominated as the Democratic candidate for her successor. On November 6, 2018, he won both the by-election for this mandate and the regular election against Republican Jim Maxwell. At the beginning of the 116th Congress , Morelle was assigned to the following committees: Budget Committee, Committee on Education and Workers, and Members of the Rules Committee.

Private

He and his wife, Mary Beth, have three children, Lauren, Joseph Jr., and Nicholas.
