Pug Horton

Joanne Barbara "Pug" Horton (born May 30, 1932 in Sheffield ) is a British jazz and blues singer.

Life

Pug Horton's interest in the blues was sparked by listening to Bessie Smith records when she was eleven . In 1945/46 she was a singer in her uncle Colin Whitehead's band. Between 1947 and 1960 she worked as a singer , dancer , actress and model in Great Britain, Canada and the USA. In 1960 she began to sing again with Skip Parson's band. Between 1961 and 1974 she performed with the collaborative Jazz Cellar Six on the east coast of the US. She also had an agency , her own TV and radio show, and produced TV documentaries. She has a Masters degree in Psychology , Sociology, and Art Management .

She was later married to the clarinetist and saxophonist Bob Wilber and performed frequently with him (for example in the sextet Bechet Legacy , founded in 1981 , as the name suggests, in the tradition of Sidney Bechet , and in the Smithsonian Jazz Repertory Orchestra ), also on the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Nice Jazz Festival .
