Life
As a child, Hanna was a piano student of Josephine Love . After two years of service in the US Army, he studied at Eastman and the Juilliard School of Music . He began his musical career in 1958 as a partner of Benny Goodman , the following year he worked with Charles Mingus . From 1967 to 1974 he was a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra ; In 1971 he worked on Charles Mingus' big band album Let My Children Hear Music . In 1974 he was one of the founding members of the New York Jazz Quartet alongside Frank Wess . Later he appeared mainly as a soloist or in small ensembles such as in a duo with George Mraz or as an accompanist for musicians such as Sarah Vaughan , Carmen McRae , Miriam Klein and Al Hibbler . For a series of benefit concerts in favor of Liberian children, the President of Liberia , William Tubman , raised him to the nobility in 1970; since then he has called himself Sir Roland Hanna.
Hanna created more than four hundred compositions in which he often crossed the boundaries of jazz music. These include the ballads Perugia and After Paris , a ballet for jazz orchestra and strings, and Oasis for piano and orchestra, performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1993 .
He has also taught at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College , the New School and the Eastman School of Music.
