Márton Lőrincz (born October 28, 1911 in Corund , Harghita County , † November 26, 1969 in San Carlos de Bariloche , Argentina ) was a Hungarian wrestler and Olympic champion.

Career

Márton Lőrincz has developed into a world-class wrestler in Budapest since the early 1930s . He wrestled in both styles, Greco-Roman and free style. However, it took until 1934 before he was able to prevail in Hungary against the top wrestlers Ödön Zombori and László Szekfü .

In 1934 he was used for the first time at a European championship at the European championship in Stockholm and immediately won the European bantamweight title, free style. He also defeated Herman Tuvesson from Sweden , Ödön Zombori's feared opponent, safely on points.

At the European Championships in Copenhagen in 1935 in the Greco-Roman style, he could not prevail and retired in the bantamweight division with two defeats after the 2nd round. He fared better at the European Championships of the same year in Brussels in free style. He became vice European champion after a defeat in the final battle against Marcello Nizzola from Italy .

It is surprising that Lőrincz was used in the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the Greco-Roman style, although he had achieved much greater success in the free style. He convinced officials and opponents in Berlin with his excellent form and was rewarded with four wins and one defeat against the Estonian Evald Sikk, which did not have a negative effect, with winning the gold medal.

After the Olympic Games in 1936, he ended his international career. Márton Lőrincz was of Jewish faith. However, he managed to get to safety in time from Hitler's henchmen to Argentina , where he lived until his death in 1969.
