An Han-bong (born October 15, 1968 ) is a former South Korean wrestler . He became Olympic champion in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight in 1992 .

Career

An Han-bong began wrestling as a teenager in 1982. He focused on the Greco-Roman style and belonged to the Samsung Life Company Sports Club Seoul . He was trained mainly by Kim Young-nam. He is an insurance employee and after his resignation he also works as a wrestler trainer. At a height of 1.63 meters, he initially wrestled in the flyweight and switched to the bantamweight in 1991.

He made his debut on the international wrestling mat in 1986, when he at the Junior World Cup in Schifferstadt in the age group "Juniors" (up to 18 years) in the light flyweight title against Radu Strubert from Romania and Edward Davydov from the Soviet Union won . In the senior class, he first took part in an international championship in 1989. He won the Asian championship in the Japanese Oarai Ibaraki flyweight before Georgi Kachabrishvili from Iran and Shohei Nakamori from Japan . In 1989 he started at the World Championships in Martigny / Switzerland , where he won a bronze medal in the flyweight division behind Alexander Ignatenko from the Soviet Union and Remzi Öztürk from Turkey .

In 1990 An Han-bong won the Asian Flyweight Games in Beijing ahead of Hu Richa, People's Republic of China and Pak Bom-su from North Korea . He also won another medal at the 1990 World Cup in Rome- Ostia, the silver one. Again Alexander Ignatenko placed himself in front of him. In 1991 he did not take part in any international championships. But he used this year to move up from flyweight to bantamweight.

The success of this measure then became apparent at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . In Barcelona he defeated Ergüder Bekisdamat, Turkey, Zoran Galovic, IWP, Sheng Zetiang , China, Keijo Pehkonen , Finland and Marian Sandu , Romania, and thus faced the German Rıfat Yıldız in the final . In this fight he quickly fell behind, but finally defeated the German on points because the German chose the wrong tactic and wanted to save his lead over time. Han-bong recognized this and put Rifat Yildiz under more and more pressure with his offensive way of ringing, which he could not withstand in the long run. As a result, Han-bong deservedly won the gold medal.

In 1993 An Han-bong was not at the start of the World Championships, but in 1994. He came in Tampere , where Yuri Melnitschenko from Kazakhstan won the title from Alexander Ignatenko, but only in 8th place. In 1995 he was again Asian champion in bantamweight in Manila before Daisuke Hanahara from Japan. At the 1995 World Championships in Prague he finished 6th.

The last start at an international championship he then completed at the 1996 Asian Championships in Xiaoshan , China , where he only finished 5th. Then he resigned.
