Rıfat Yıldız

Rıfat Yıldız (born April 1, 1965 in Yenigazi , Kars ) is a former German wrestler , two-time world champion, European champion and silver medalist at the 1992 Olympic Games in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight.

Career

Rıfat Yıldız grew up in Germany as the son of Turkish parents . In Aschaffenburg he started wrestling at the sports club “Einigkeit” in the Damm district in 1982 and was supervised by the experienced trainer Franz Schmitt . His older brother Fuat and younger brother Harun also became successful wrestlers. Rıfat Yıldız was naturalized in 1987 and soon caused a sensation for the German Wrestling Association . At his first international tournament in 1987, the Grand Prix of the Federal Republic of Germany in Aschaffenburg, he took first place and already showed his potential for the Greco-Roman style that he had learned from Schmitt. This potential was shown again at the 1987 World Cup in Clermont-Ferrand , where Rifat immediately became vice world champion after a narrow point defeat against Patrice Mourier from France .

In the following years 1988 and 1989, however, Rifat showed weaknesses in the tactical area at the major international championships. A 4th place at the European Championship in Kolbotn / Norway was therefore the best result of those years. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he reached 8th place in bantamweight.

The most successful years in Rıfat Yıldız's career followed from 1990 to 1992. He is considered the best bantamweight wrestler in the world in the Greco-Roman style during these years. He became world champion in Rome in 1990 and in Varna in 1991 and also European champion in Copenhagen in 1992 , after taking 3rd place at the European Championships in Poznan and Aschaffenburg in 1990 and 1991 .

As a favorite, Rifat went to the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . Rifat was well prepared and successfully entered the final against William Lara ( Cuba ), Alexander Ignatenko ( CIS ), András Sike ( Hungary ) and Patrice Mourier (France). There he met An Han-bong ( South Korea ), but after an early lead of 5: 2 could not keep this point advantage and was narrowly beaten.

For his sporting successes he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993.

After this defeat, Rıfat could not repeat the performance of the years from 1990 to 1992 at the major international championships. However, he continued to show exceptional performances in various tournaments, for example at the 1994 European Championship, where he started in featherweight and put the reigning world champion Sergei Martynow ( Russia ) on the shoulders. He also won bronze medals in bantamweight with very good performances at the European Championships in Budapest in 1996 and at the European Championships in Moscow in 2000 . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , he finished 5th. After intensive preparation, Rıfat Yıldız competed in Sydney in 2000 , despite his age of 35 years. Here he failed after three victories in the semifinals against the Armenian Armen Nazarjan , who started for Bulgaria , and in the fight for the bronze medal against the Chinese Sheng Zetiang no longer had the strength, a 0: 2 point deficit, which he got right at the beginning of the fight was advised to catch up. He had to be content with 4th place.

In his career, Rifat fought for SV “Einigkeit” Aschaffenburg -Damm, KSC Hösbach , AC Goldbach , AV Markneukirchen and KSV “Germania” Aalen in the German Bundesliga. Today he works as a trainer at ASV Schaafheim . With his international success he is without a doubt one of the most outstanding German wrestlers.
