Ismael Borrero Molina (born January 16, 1992 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban wrestler . In 2015 he became world champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 59 kg body weight and won gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Career
Ismael Borrero Molina has been doing sports since primary school. He started out with weightlifting but switched to wrestling in 2004. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. At the national level, he won several championship titles in the youth and junior sector in the following years. At the age of 18 he became the Cuban senior champion for the first time in 2010. In 2012 he won his first international title. He was in Colorado Springs the Pan-American master in the seniors and in Peten, Guatemala, also the Pan-American master in the juniors, each in the weight class up to 60 kg body weight. He could not take part in the Junior World Championships between 2010 and 2012 because Cuba did not send wrestlers to these championships.
In April 2013 he was again the Pan-American champion in the weight class up to 60 kg in Panama City ahead of Diego Romanelli from Brazil. In September 2013 he started in Budapest for the first time at the World Championships for Seniors. In the weight class up to 60 kg, he defeated Stig Andre Berge from Norway and Istvan Kozak from Hungary. In his next fight he lost to Kazuma Kuramoto from Japan. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and came in 11th place.
In 2014, Ismael Borrero Molina won the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Jose, Puerto Rico, and also won the Pan-American Championship in Mexico City in the weight class up to 59 kg in the same year. At the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent, he was just about to win his first medal in such an important championship. He first defeated Yerbol Koniratow from Kazakhstan and Goderzi Dawitadze from Georgia in the same weight class in Tashkent, then lost to the multiple world and Olympic champion Hamid Soryan Reihanpour from Iran. Then he won the consolation round over Taleh Mammadow from Azerbaijan and Haitham Mahmoud Fahmy from Egypt. In the decisive fight for a world championship bronze medal he was then defeated by Elmurat Tasmuradow from Uzbekistan and came in 5th place.
At the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015, he disappointed with a 7th place in the weight class up to 59 kg. At this year's World Championships in Las Vegas, however, he achieved his greatest success of his career so far in the same weight class. He defeated in turn Spenser Thomas Mango from the United States, Deniz Menekse from Germany, Soslan Daurow from Belarus, Kim Seung-hak from South Korea, Almat Kebispajew from Kazakhstan and Rovshan Bayramov from Azerbaijan and thus became world champion in a superior style.
In 2016, Ismael Borrero Molina won over Arsen Eralijew, Kyrgyzstan, Wang Lumin, China, Elmurat Tasmuradow, Uzbekistan and Shinobu Ōta , Japan in Rio de Janeiro and also became Olympic champion in the weight class up to 59 kg.
After a training break in 2017, Ismael Borrero Molina could no longer bring the weight of 59 kg. He had to start in the weight class up to 67 kg body weight from 2018. In January 2018 he took part in this weight class at the "Takhti" Cup in Mahshar, Iran. He was able to win two fights there, but lost in the fight for 3rd place against Mohammad Elyasi from Iran and came in 5th place. In the further course of 2018 he won at least the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Havana, the Pan American Games in Lima and the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla. In October 2018 he took part in the World Championships in Budapest in the weight class up to 67 kg. There he won his first fight against Mirsobek Rachmatow from Uzbekistan, but lost his next fight against Meiirschan Schermachanbet from Kazakhstan. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 16th place.
In 2019, Ismael Borrero Molina first became the Pan-American champion in the weight class up to 67 kg in Buenos Aires and later also the winner of the Pan-American Games in Lima.
