Rustem Abdullajewitsch Kasakow (also Rustam Kasakow ; Russian Рустем or Рустам Абдуллаевич Казаков, Uzbek Rustam Qozoqov ; born January 2, 1947 in Tashkent ) is a former Soviet wrestler . He became Olympic champion in Munich in 1972 .

Career

Rustem Kazakov, a Crimean Tatar, started wrestling as a teenager. He developed into an excellent wrestler in the Greco-Roman style and was delegated to the Tashkent Army Sports Club as a member of the army . In 1967 he took 2nd place in the big international "Ivan Podubbny" tournament in Moscow in bantamweight and was then sent to the European Championships in Bucharest . There he delivered four good fights, but was defeated by the experienced Romanian Ion Baciu and came in 7th place, which is not entirely satisfactory for a Soviet wrestler. For this reason, it was not used until the 1969 World Cup in Mar del Plata ( Argentina ). At this world championship, a tough three-way battle for victory between Kazakov, David Hazewinkel from the USA and Ion Baciu developed in bantamweight , whom Kazakow won and returned to the Soviet Union as world champion .

At the 1970 World Cup in Edmonton , Kazakov failed to defend his title. Although he remained undefeated with four wins and two undecided fights, he had to be satisfied with the bronze medal because of the worse points ratio than Ion Baciu and János Varga from Hungary .

In 1971 Rustem Kazakow was the winner of the Völkerspartakiade of the USSR, which is extremely important in the Soviet Union, ahead of Anatoli Ostschepkow and Yuri Sokolow . At the world championship of the same year in Sofia he then won his second world title. Although he lost to János Varga, he was able to defeat his feared opponent Ion Baciu for the first time.

Kazakov celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . In a very difficult tournament in which no wrestler remained without defeat, he succeeded in winning the Olympic gold before the German champion Hans-Jürgen Veil . Before that, he had lost to Christo Traikow from Bulgaria , who was eliminated before the final.

At the 1973 World Cup in Tehran , Kasakow started at an international championship for the last time and found his master in a new man, Józef Lipień from Poland , who defeated him on points. But he became vice world champion.
